Advanced Concepts of GD&T ASME Y14.5 2009 - Foundational Level ET3016

Topics: Quality, Safety & Maintenance

This two-day foundational-level course teaches Advanced Concepts of GD&T as prescribed in the ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard. It offers an explanation of complex GD&T topics, such as the expanded use of composite position and profile tolerances, customized datum reference frames, the translation modifier, and applying GD&T to non-rigid parts.

You’ll learn about functional dimensioning, form controls, the datum system, additional and complex datum feature types, expanded datum target concepts and usage on restrained parts, simultaneous, and separate requirements.

Each participant receives a robust collection of learning resources including:
  • Advanced Concepts of GD&T Coursebook (ASME Y14.5-2009)
  • 2009 Ultimate GD&T Pocket Guide

Learning is reinforced through performing numerous exercises at the end of each lesson.

Learning Objectives

After completing this foundational-level course, you’ll be able to:

  • Explain the concept of functional dimensioning
  • Describe advanced applications of form controls
  • Review and describe the uses, advantages, misconceptions, and common application errors of the datum system
  • Describe six additional datum feature types and four complex datum feature types
  • Describe how to use the translation modifier and a customized datum reference frame
  • Review datum targets and understand expanded datum target concepts
  • Explain the difference between a rigid and a nonrigid (flexible) part
  • Describe the requirements for tolerancing parts measured in the restrained condition
  • Describe how datum targets and datum feature shift are used on restrained nonrigid parts
  • Describe the effects of simultaneous and separate requirements and how they apply to position tolerances
  • Explain multiple single-segment and composite position tolerancing
  • Explain when to use profile tolerances
  • Describe the effects of simultaneous vs. separate requirements with profile
  • Explain multiple single-segment and composite profile tolerancing

Who Should Attend

This course is valuable for individuals who create or interpret engineering drawings, product and gage designers; process, product, and manufacturing engineers; supplier quality engineers/professionals; CMM operators; buyers/purchasers; checkers; inspectors; technicians; and sales engineers/professionals.

Prerequisites

Participants should have basic knowledge and command of the GD&T ASME Y14.5 standard, which provides guidelines for engineering drawing sheet layout.

You must complete all course contact hours and successfully pass the learning assessment to obtain CEUs.
