Aims and Scope

The SAE International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, Energy, Environment, & Policy is a peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for the exchange of novel, innovative, and transdisciplinary ideas on incorporating and enhancing sustainability from environmental, energy, engineering, public policy, social, and economic perspectives over the entire life cycle of automobiles, aircrafts, and other transportation systems that span across diverse landscapes. In particular, this journal focuses on combining the engineering perspective with one or more of the other aforementioned topics to analyze the potential ways of improving the environmental performance of the transportation sector.

The scope includes the development of environmental and socio-economic metrics, advancements in and application of analytics and costing methodologies, and the assessment of environmental impacts via the use of various methodologies to assess and compare the different aspects of sustainable transportation. The journal also welcomes studies that assess and highlight the impact and contribution of proposed and actual transport policies, as well as of emerging/proposed technologies on the different aspects of sustainable transport related to energy and our environment. These aspects of sustainable transportation systems (automobiles, aircraft, or other such systems), which can be evaluated over all stages of their life cycle (production, consumption/use, and end-of-life), include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Current and emerging technologies with regard to different transport systems (such as automobiles (cars), buses, trucks, trains, and aircraft)
  • Components and materials associated with these different transportation systems, such as engines and exhaust control devices (components) and different grades or types of steel, aluminum, plastics, and composites (materials)
  • Auto-efficiency–enhancing mechanisms and strategies, such as design optimization, novel combustion technologies, light-weighting, application of thermoelectric devices, and hybrid/electric/battery-operated vehicles
  • Technologies and initiatives that enable and ease the measurement and control of emissions for all kinds of vehicles, such as Real Driving Emissions (RDE) and exhaust emissions control
  • Auto-associated infrastructure, such as gasoline pumps, battery-charging stations, and parking-related infrastructure

Additionally, the journal will also invite manuscripts that evaluate the impact of electric vehicles on the energy mix (nationally/globally) and its subsequent impacts on our environment. Metrics and methodologies associated with the sustainability analysis of automobiles and mobility options and technologies include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Impact assessment methodologies and environmental metrics: life cycle assessment; substance flow analysis; environmental impact assessment; emissions (atmospheric, land, water) measurement and control; carbon and water footprint; energy footprint, consumption, and/or savings; efficiency improvements; eco-labels
  • Socio-economic metrics: multi-criteria decision analysis, cost-benefit analysis
  • Costing methodologies: life-cycle financial/economic costs, socio-environmental costs
  • Public policy measures: monetary/non-monetary policies, health and behavioral policies, population growth and urbanization impacts, traffic and congestion, policies affecting transportation design and engineering-related decision making, effect on energy mix
  • Engineering methodologies: design, materials, and manufacturing practices that impact sustainable transportation

This journal is a member of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). The journal’s publication processes and ethics policies follow COPE guidelines.

Editorial Board

Editor-in-Chief: Dr. Srikanth Pilla, Professor and Director, Center for Composite Materials, University of Delaware, USA

Dr. Srikanth Pilla is the Director of the Center for Composite Materials at the University of Delaware (UD-CCM). He is also the Founding Director of ‘AIM for Composites’, a Department of Energy funded Energy Frontier Research Center. Pilla earned his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a postdoctoral training from Stanford University. Prior to joining UD-CCM, Pilla held the ExxonMobil Employees Chair in Engineering and was the founding director of the Clemson Composites Center, at Clemson University. Pilla also worked as an Assistant Scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Pilla’s research interests are in the fundamentals and applications of sustainable and lightweight functional materials and manufacturing. Pilla has co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed archival publications. His research is supported by NSF, DOE, USDA, DOD, and NASA, besides several foundations and industries including automotive OEMs, and their suppliers. Pilla currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of SAE International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, Energy, Environment and Policy. Pilla’s efforts in research and engineering education have garnered him numerous awards, including the 2022 DOE-VTO Team Award, 2021 US EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, 2021 Innovision’s Sustainability Award, 2019 Composites Educator of the Year Award, 2018 SC Governor’s Young Scientist Award, 2017 Stefan Pischinger Young Industry Leadership Award, 2017 SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, and 2016 Robert J. Hocken Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer award from SME. He has supervised over 50 graduate students and postdocs, and many undergraduate students. Four of his former team members now hold faculty positions at the University of Texas-El Paso, Cleveland State University, Clemson University and Amasya University.
