Photogrammetry and Analysis of Digital Media C1712

Topics: Accident Reconstruction

Photographs and video recordings of vehicle crashes and accident sites are more prevalent than ever, with dash mounted cameras, surveillance footage, and personal cell phones now ubiquitous. The information contained in these pictures and videos provide critical information to understanding how crashes occurred, and  analyze physical evidence. This course teaches the theory and techniques for getting the most out of digital media, including correctly processing raw video and photographs, correcting for lens distortion, and using photogrammetric techniques to convert the information in digital media to usable scaled three-dimensional data. Hands-on training using actual case studies and a variety of software titles such as 3D Studio Max, PTLens, Photoshop, and PFTrack will introduce the students to the latest techniques.

Please note, this course is scheduled to end at 2:00 p.m. on day 3 to allow participants to make afternoon flights.

This course has been approved by the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) for 21 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Upon completion of this course, accredited reconstructionists should mail a copy of their course certificate of achievement and the $5 participant CEU fee to ACTAR, PO Box 1493, North Platte, NE 69103.

Learning Objectives

By attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Remove lens distortion from photographs and video
  • Utilize the latest techniques in photogrammetry software
  • Accurately locate roadway evidence using photogrammetry
  • Determine crush measurements from photogrammetry
  • Create photogrammetry-based point clouds
  • Analyze video footage for object positioning and timing
  • Effectively present your findings in court.

Who Should Attend

This course is geared toward individuals interested in video and photographic analysis, including engineers, accident reconstructionists and investigators, and law enforcement personnel. Individuals working in the field of autonomous vehicles and remote sensing will also find the concepts presented relevant since the photogrammetry principles taught in the course are the same used in the cameras and sensors installed on vehicles.

You must complete all course contact hours and successfully pass the learning assessment to obtain CEUs.

Alireza Hashemian and Toby Terpstra

Alizera Hashemian Alireza Hashemian is a Managing Accident Reconstructionist at Explico, a forensic science firm that delivers premium services in areas such as accident reconstruction, biomechanics, human factors, and visualization. Mr. Hashemian has a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado. He is a LEVA certified forensic video technician and received his Accident Reconstruction accreditation (ACTAR) in 2017. He has more than twelve years of experience in the visualization field where he utilizes his skills in computer simulation, 3D modeling, animation, photogrammetry and video analysis to investigate and analyze accidents. Mr. Hashemian regularly participates in research and has published works with SAE International and ACSR (Association for Crime Scene Reconstruction) on photogrammetry, video analysis, and 3D visualization.

Toby Terstra Toby Terpstra is a Senior 3D Analyst at J.S. Held, an international forensic company. He is located in Denver Colorado and specializes in photogrammetry, video analysis and 3D site reconstruction. He has testified in state and federal courts on civil and criminal matters. He has published in the areas of reverse camera projection, onsite photogrammetry, lens distortion correction, photo-scanning, camera-matching photogrammetry, video analysis, 3D scene reconstruction, LiDAR, and acoustics. Mr. Terpstra also serves as a peer reviewer for the SAE International, the Association of Crime Scene Reconstruction (ACSR), and the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE). He is a certified forensic video technician and is an instructor of an ACTAR (Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction) accredited, three-day course offered by SAE titled: 'Photogrammetry Analysis of Digital Media.' Hundreds of hours have been spent in the initial development of this course and new research, field work, and experiences serve to advance the course for each new offering.
